Public Education Budget Cuts
The British Columbia Teachers’ Federation states that funding is now not sufficient to cover costs and it is projected to decline significantly over the next three years. In their updated analysis of the Ministry of Education budget 2009 announcement, they show that funding increases for public education programs is cut in half and new funding for education programs is diminishing. This will affect operating grants as well as funding freezes to 34 school districts within the province. It will also mean a continued decrease in funding due to inflation in the K-12 system and no funding available for increased labour settlement costs or unmet needs in the education system. On the whole, the K-12 funding shortfall is greater than expected and there is not enough funding available to cover costs.
